The NYCB dolls, approximately 16 inches tall, boast multiple articulated joints, including bending wrists. Dolls are sculpted with stationary en pointe feet one style is made with standard high-heel arched fashion feet and feature a smaller bustline than traditional Tyler-style inch fashion dolls. For the collection, Tonner opted for the small bust torso developed for the Memoirs of a Geisha collection and the bending wrist articulation developed for Tyler. I love ballet. It was just good fortune we had the body ready for her when the opportunity came. Emilie, however, was produced using the Tyler body and fashion foot, and, as such, remains unique.
Their distinct appearance is characterized by long, trailing kimono , traditional hairstyles and oshiroi make-up. The most literal translation of "geisha" in the English language would be "artist", "performing artist" or "artisan". Another regional term for geisha with a slightly different meaning is " geiko ", a term used to describe geisha in Western Japan, including Kyoto and Kanazawa. This term directly translates as "woman of art", and is part of the Kyoto dialect spoken by geisha in Kyoto and Western Japan. A number of terms are used to describe the profession and community that geisha both live and work in. Okiya are usually run by women, many of whom are ex-geisha themselves.
It does not cover every doll, because many were made by individual artists. These three figures are discussed on the Onnagata and Oiran page, with illustrations. The first two of the three dolls below appear to represent women; they show the role, rather than the onnagata or male actor playing the woman. The third doll, the Kagami Jishi lion, has a more masculine appearance and stage makeup to cue the viewer to understand that it represents an actor playing a lion. For comparison, I include photos of the onnagata Tamasaburo Bando in the same roles.
